Engineering for a Specialist Automotive Facility

Tesla’s Dartford facility presented a distinctive building-services brief, combining specialist automotive spaces with offices, showroom areas and an interactive customer environment.

Lawler Consulting worked as part of the Design & Build team, alongside BSPS Ltd and sister company Pivotal International, providing the MEP design required to support the different operational and environmental requirements across the facility.

The project built on Lawler’s experience in showroom and workplace environments while introducing specialist requirements associated with Tesla’s automotive operations and customer experience.

Designing Around Different Environments

Different areas of the facility required different approaches to environmental comfort and building-services design.

Several office spaces had no external windows and instead incorporated glazed walls overlooking the main showroom. These spaces required enhanced ventilation together with air-conditioning to maintain comfortable internal conditions and manage the risk of overheating.

The engineering design therefore needed to respond closely to the layout and use of individual spaces rather than applying a single building-services solution throughout the facility.

Lighting the Customer Experience

Within the showroom, lighting formed an important part of both the engineering design and the finished customer environment.

The long, wide showroom required a ceiling-hung lighting solution designed to provide effective illumination across the space while presenting the vehicles to a high visual standard.

The facility also incorporated an interactive area where customers could configure their vehicles, adding another customer-facing element to the building-services brief and reinforcing the need to consider engineering as part of the overall experience of the space.

Fast-Track Design & Build Delivery

One of the defining features of the project was its programme.

From initial Mechanical & Electrical design through to handover and closeout, the project was completed within nine weeks.

Delivering within this timeframe required close coordination between the engineering, construction and wider project teams, with MEP solutions developed around both the specialist requirements of the facility and the demands of a fast-track Design & Build programme.
