The Challenge

Lidl Ireland set out to create the country’s first Net Zero Energy supermarket, a landmark development in Irish retail. The vision was to design and deliver a store that:

  • produces all of its operational energy onsite
  • minimises long-term energy and carbon costs
  • enhances customer comfort and experience
  • provides a commercially viable, replicable model for future stores

To achieve this, Lidl needed an integrated engineering and services design solution that combined high-performance M&E systems with renewable generation and smart controls, all within a tightly controlled retail environment.

Our Approach

Lawler Consulting provided full Mechanical & Electrical design and integration services for the Lidl Maynooth project, working closely with the client, design team and specialist consultants throughout concept, delivery and commissioning.

Key elements of our approach included:

  • Smart HVAC system design tailored for comfort and energy responsiveness
  • Advanced lighting and controls to balance daylight and LED efficiency
  • Integration of a large-scale photovoltaic (PV) generation system
  • Digital energy modelling to predict performance and reduce risk
  • Coordination of refrigeration, heating, cooling and building services under a unified energy strategy

This approach ensured that performance goals were embedded directly into engineering decisions and delivered in a practical, buildable solution.

Project Outcomes

First Net Zero Energy Supermarket in Ireland
The Maynooth store is the first retail building in the country to generate all its operational energy from onsite renewables, marking a major milestone for sustainable retail.

Large-Scale Renewable Integration
A 575 kWp PV array spanning the rooftop and car park provides renewable electrical generation equivalent to the energy used by over 40 typical households annually and helps offset embodied carbon from the building’s construction.

Enhanced Indoor Experience
Responsive HVAC and lighting systems contribute to improved indoor air quality, thermal comfort and customer experience — supporting longer dwell time and staff wellbeing.

Community and Sustainability Features
The store includes a biodiverse community garden, living wall and extensive active travel infrastructure including EV chargers and e-bike/scooter charging stations, demonstrating broad sustainability impact beyond energy generation.

Commercial and Operational Value
By reducing energy demand and stabilising operational energy costs, the project delivers long-term value for Lidl and sets a replicable blueprint for future net zero retail builds.
