Creating a New Landmark for Learning

Edmund Rice College was created to meet the growing educational needs of Dublin 15, delivering a modern secondary school designed to serve a rapidly expanding community.

Working alongside JJ Rhatigan under the Department of Education’s Design & Build programme, Lawler Consulting provided the Mechanical & Electrical Building Services Engineering for a new 11,265 m² school accommodating 1,000 students. The development includes four special educational needs units, a PE hall, a general-purpose area and extensive teaching and staff facilities, creating a flexible environment designed to support learning for generations to come.

Engineering a Smarter School

Educational buildings demand more than regulatory compliance. They must create comfortable, efficient and adaptable environments while performing reliably throughout the school day.

Our team developed an integrated M&E design that balanced energy performance, operational efficiency and long-term running costs. Every element was designed to support both the daily experience of students and staff and the long-term performance of the building itself.

Key features included:

  • Rainwater harvesting system supplying grey water throughout the building.
  • High-efficiency low water content radiators.
  • Photovoltaic system offsetting approximately 10% of building power consumption.
  • Advanced daylight harvesting lighting controls.
  • Building Energy System providing real-time energy monitoring.
  • High-performance LED lighting throughout the building

Project Outcomes

  1. A3 Building Energy Rating achieved.
  2. Accommodation for 1,000 students.
  3. Four dedicated Special Educational Needs units.
  4. Integrated energy monitoring supporting long-term operational performance.
  5. Digital-first BIM coordination improving construction efficiency.
  6. Practical engineering solutions designed to reduce energy consumption and running costs.
